Musicians Corner

Where is the best place to get strings?

I know that if you are a musician like me having good strings is important. No matter how good your guitar is or how well you play a good set of strings can make all the difference in the world. And since you need strings, like me, then you need to get them at the best price. Nothing is worse than playing a coffee house gig and not have made enough to get good strings. Laugh, but see what the retail dudes are going to charge you plus tax for those Cleartone or Martin SP+ strings. I already know and that is why I order strings from Strings and Beyond.

This is not a paid advertisement so what I am telling you is from personnel experience. I think musicians love to make great music and deserve to shop for strings and related stuff at a decent price. Do yourself a favor and take a look and see what you think.

  • Open Mic or Jam?

I have had folks ask me lately about a jam or open mic. What is that all about? It is something on this order. A jam is when a bunch of musicians get together and play songs together. Each one gets a turn to lead the group of musicians. Lead guitar or instrument breaks can take place depending on the song or rules of the jam.  An open mic is when a time slot is given to each act or musician to perform. Other musicians are not to join in unless asked to by the act in their time slot.

Which is better? I prefer open mic unless the jam is kept to a small number. Jams are more for the musicians than for a crowd to enjoy. Open mics are usually more geared at being heard by a crowd of listeners.

Where can I jam? If you go to the Rio Grande Valley you will find many places that offer jams. Many of the resort parks offer jams at different times. The Winter Texan Connection is one such source for information about them . The Rio Grande Music Festival is another great place to jam and they offer an open mic at most stages. Of course you can come to the Cowboy and Hobo Days Festival and jam with others if you are in Minnesota.

Performing onstage can take a toll on your guitar. I have found someone that can take care of your needs and put that TLC into your guitar. Barry Scott Densch is a trained Luthier and works out of his shop downstairs in his home. Unlike some of the larger music store shops that do a hurry job with so, so results, you will find a truly caring person that can do the job right. He is working on my ovation custom elite guitar right now. Tell him Willie sent you!
